Participation of the Museum of Byzantine Culture in the temporary exhibition “SHARED SACRED SITES”

23.09.2017 - 31.12.2017

The Museum of Byzantine Culture participates with artefacts from its collections in the temporary exhibition “Shared Sacred Sites”, which is organized by the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art and the Thessaloniki Museum of Photography in cooperation with the Municipality of Thessaloniki.

A few words for the exhibition by its curators:

Despite theological differences, the three religions share a number of elements in terms of beliefs, rites, holy figures and places. These crossovers, however, are not devoid of ambiguity and can sometimes also lead to conflict. The Mediterranean world thus offers many examples of sharing, but also of partition and division.
The exhibition is organized in such a way that it leads to an anthropological tour of sanctuaries, dedicated to prophets and patriarchs, to the Virgin Mary and to some saints, as well as to works of modern art, which are new places for sharing sanctuary concepts. Especially with the latter, questions arise about the power of religious symbols and traditions, as well as about the practices that are at the core or at the edges of religion and faith.

In the Thessaloniki Museum of Photography educational programs and guided tours will be implemented during the whole duration of the exhibition.

The three-part exhibition is organized by the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art and the Thessaloniki Museum of Photography in cooperation with the Municipality of Thessaloniki.

Exhibition duration

23 September – 31 December 2017
