In the conservation workshop of stone, which operates since 1994, sculptures and architectural members – most of them made of marble – are conserved. They come from excavations in Thessaloniki and its broader region. Most sculptures of the Museum’s permanent exhibition have been conserved in the workshop’s space, which gradually was strengthened with equipment and staff. All artifacts conserved are recorded, documented and photographed and all the stages of conservation are kept on file. Sculptures, destined for temporary exhibitions of the Museum, are also conserved in the workshop.

Moreover, the conservation workshop has conserved sculptures from the Ephorate of Antiquities of the City of Thessaloniki, the Ephorate of Antiquities of the town and the region of Kavala and from the Tellogleion Foundation of Arts of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

Among the tasks of the workshop’s conservators is the control of the conservation status of the sculptures of the permanent exhibition, the concern for the safe storage of the Museum’s sculptures as well as their preventive conservation. Moreover the control of the sculptures sent to exhibitions outside the Museum as well as the writing of the “condition reports”, which accompany them.

Guided tours and educational visits are carried out in the workshop’s rooms and undergraduate students of the conservation science from Greece and abroad make their practice there. They, at the same time, enrich their knowledge and contribute to the workshop’s work.
