The Adoration of the Magi
The scene is set in a landscape painted in a naturalist mood. Mountains, rivers, a lake, a city, a bridge and a water-mill are represented. On the left, Virgin Mary with Christ in her lap and Joseph standing behind her is greeting the Magi approaching from the right. The eldest man is preceding; he is kneeling. Together with the two younger ones, standing behind him, they offer the gifts to Christ. In the icon several compositional elements and expressive modes of the western painting are adopted. The most typical elements are the shelter in the building, the garments of the figures and the landscape that comes from 14th and 15th century Italian art. These elements are introduced in the works by the artists of the Italian –Cretan school during the 15th and 16th centuries. The icon could be dated in the early16th century.
