The Museum of Byzantine Culture and the Belgrade City Museum are launching the exhibition “From Crete to the Danube. Icons from the Sekulić Collection, Belgrade City Museum” on Thursday, December 15, 2022 at 19:00 in the multi-purpose hall of the MBC “Eftychia Kourkoutidou-Nikolaidou”.
In the exhibition will be presented for the first time outside of Serbia selected icons from the famous Collection of Milan and Pava Sekulić, bequeathed to the Belgrade City Museum. The icons are dating from the 15th to the 19th century, and are works of known and anonymous painters, representative of the trends of post-Byzantine painting in the wider area of the Balkans, “from Crete to the Danube”.
The exhibition has an additional objective to highlight the common historical, religious and cultural ties of the two countries, Greece and Serbia, through works of religious devotion, ambassadors of the common cultural heritage in the wider Balkan area, highlighting at the same time the communication and dialogue between the East and the West through common artistic and trade routes and the effort to preserve the Orthodox faith in the Ottoman-occupied territory.
At the end of the exhibition, the visitor has the opportunity to tour the space where the Collection is currently exhibited, in the apartment of the Sekulić family, in Belgrade, through virtual reality glasses.
